Virginia Powell - printmaker

Virginia Powell sketching at a fish marketI studied printmaking as the main part of my course at Chelsea Art School and soon realised that this was the medium I predominantly enjoyed.

Latterly, I've been drawn towards people at work as subject matter: the operating theatre at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, and Brixton and Billingsgate markets.

I love drawing food, sitting in cafes with a sketch book and meals that I may be about to eat. I find subjects connected with fish particularly absorbing. I've drawn in smokehouses and oyster beds on Loch Fyne and have my work hung in many Loch Fyne Restaurants.

Billingsgate Market has a very exciting atmosphere and this is where all my most recent work has been done. I've also become preoccupied with a building site opposite our home and am trying to capture the scaffolders at work and the continuing change in the view.

Inevitably, many of these subjects become transposed into etchings and lithographs.
